Short answer
A route to public trading in which existing shareholders sell shares directly, often without a traditional underwritten IPO.
In a direct listing, a private company’s shares begin trading on an exchange without the traditional IPO process of selling a fixed batch of newly issued shares through underwriters. Existing shareholders may sell directly to public investors. Depending on the structure, the company may raise little or no new capital, and the opening price is discovered through market trading.
